Derby is a compact annual selection of Melampodium divaricatum, grown for golden-yellow daisylike flowers that continue from late spring until frost. Missouri Botanical Garden describes the garden plant at 12–18 inches tall with a 9–12-inch spread, while Benary’s product page lists a smaller 8-by-7-inch plant.
## Garden Use
Bright yellow flower heads stand above green foliage and make Derby useful in borders, beds, window boxes, containers, or a small cutting garden. Its compact, bushy habit suits the front of a planting or the edge of a path. Flowers are produced continuously, with new branches and buds following as older flowers fade.
## Growing Conditions
Grow in full sun or light shade and average, well-drained soil. Keep moisture even while plants establish, then water when the soil begins to dry; Missouri Botanical Garden notes that the plant prefers soil slightly on the dry side. Set it outdoors after frost or start seed indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost. It is an annual, so no winter protection is needed.
## Maintenance
Deadheading is unnecessary. In hot weather, taller stems may flop; give plants adequate spacing and airflow, especially where powdery mildew is a concern. Derby may self-seed in favorable conditions.
