About Ruby Grass

Ruby grass (*Melinis nerviglumis*) is a compact warm-season ornamental grass from southern Africa, grown for its blue-green leaves and airy pink plumes. The flowers open in summer, reach their strongest display in late summer to early fall, and gradually fade to silvery white as they age. ([University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/ruby-grass-melinus-nerviglumis/); [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/130201/melinis-nerviglumis/details)) ## In the Garden The foliage forms dense, mounded clumps about 8–24 inches tall. Use it in sunny borders, mixed beds, rock gardens, or containers, alone or in groups where its fine texture can contrast with broad leaves. The flowering stems make fresh or dried arrangements. ## Growing Conditions Give it full sun and well-drained soil. This warm-season grass performs best in hot weather; although it can tolerate dry spells, steady moisture improves growth. Wisconsin Extension reports that the species is tender in colder climates and hardy only in zones 9a–10b; it may be grown as an annual or overwintered indoors where winters are colder. In mild areas it can self-seed freely. ## Maintenance Collect seed after the plumes turn brown, or cut back the clumps before fresh spring growth. Watch for seedlings in mild climates, where reseeding can become unwanted.
