Dawn redwood (*Metasequoia glyptostroboides*) is a fast-growing, deciduous conifer with a strongly pyramidal form. Its feathery green needles turn copper-brown before falling, and its reddish-brown bark becomes darker, fissured, and shaggy with age. ## Form and Seasonal Interest
Mature trees are commonly described at 70–100 feet tall; allow room for a broad crown, with Oregon State noting the tree can reach a flat-topped outline as it matures. Opposite, soft needles grow on deciduous branchlets. Male cones form hanging clusters, while oval female cones mature their seed in fall.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun and deep, moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic reaction. The species tolerates occasional wet soil and transplants readily, but young growth can be damaged by early freezes. It is hardy to USDA zone 4 and makes a specimen tree for large properties, parks, or pond edges.
## Maintenance
Give the tree generous space and water during establishment, especially through dry weather. Avoid compacted sites and plan for seasonal needle drop; inspect the trunk and crown as the tree develops its mature bark and branching structure.
