About Giant Maiden Grass

Giant maiden grass is the large, clump-forming hybrid Miscanthus × giganteus, with upright stems, arching dark-green leaves and pale midribs. In long, hot summers, its pink-tinged plumes open above the foliage, then fade to silvery structures that can remain through winter. ## Garden character The Royal Horticultural Society describes mature plants at roughly 2.5–4 m tall and 1.5–2.5 m wide, so this is a substantial screen, backdrop or architectural accent rather than a small border grass. The cross is between M. sinensis and M. sacchariflorus; the University of Minnesota lists it as a pollen-sterile triploid that appears unable to set seed. That distinction matters because the related M. sinensis species can self-seed and is discouraged in some regions. ## Growing conditions Choose an open, sunny site with moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates several soil textures, but avoid excessive winter wet. Allow room for a mature clump and check local guidance before planting near natural areas. ## Maintenance Leave the standing foliage and plumes for winter structure, then cut back dead stems in early spring before new growth. Divide in spring if needed, recognizing that establishment can be slow.
