About Miscanthus Gracillimus (Maiden Grass)

Gracillimus forms a loose fountain of fine, green leaves with white midribs. Purple-tinged plumes emerge from late summer into fall and often remain as pale dried stems through winter. ## Form and seasonal display This clump-forming cultivar has gracefully arching leaves and silky flower panicles. Published sizes vary: the Royal Horticultural Society lists 1–1.5 meters tall and 0.5–1 meter wide, while UF/IFAS gives a height of 5–6 feet and spread of 5–10 feet. A separate profile reports a narrower 31–35-inch spread. Give the clump room and expect its size to vary with site and growing conditions. Flowering can be sparse in cool-summer regions. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; suitable textures include chalk, clay, loam, and sand. Published hardiness guidance differs: the exact-cultivar profile lists USDA Zones 5–9, while UF/IFAS lists Zones 6–9. The fine foliage forms a soft screen or specimen planting, and the plumes can be used for dried arrangements. ## Maintenance Leave the dried stems for winter interest, then cut the clump to the ground in spring before new growth. Divide established clumps in spring if they become crowded.
