Create design onlineAbout Gracillimus Nana Maiden Grass
‘Gracillimus Nana’ is sold as a compact selection of Chinese silver grass, with a rounded clump of narrow, gracefully arching green leaves. Published size estimates vary: one profile lists 90–120 cm tall and 60–80 cm wide, while another describes foliage around 60 cm tall and wide, with flowering stems reaching roughly 100–120 cm.
## Garden character
Use this fine-textured form in a small border, group planting, or as a focal grass where its late-season plumes have room to show. One grower reports silvery-purple flowers from August to October in climates that allow it to bloom; flowering is not reliable everywhere. The foliage mound turns warm brown-orange in autumn. As a selection of M. sinensis, it shares the species’ potential to spread by seed in some regions, though that risk can vary among cultivars.
## Growing conditions
Choose a sunny site with average to moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Keep newly planted clumps evenly watered while they establish, then adjust irrigation to rainfall and soil. Allow space for the mature foliage and seedheads, and check local guidance before planting this non-native grass near natural areas.
## Maintenance
Leave the stems standing for winter texture, then cut them back in late winter or early spring before new blades emerge. Divide established clumps in spring if they become crowded. Remove unwanted seedlings where they appear.
