Create design onlineAbout Hinjo Maiden Grass
‘Hinjo’ is a compact, deciduous maiden grass that forms an upright clump of narrow, arching leaves. The green blades carry horizontal creamy-yellow bands, turn bronze-gold in autumn, and frame pale silky plumes tinted pinkish bronze in late summer and early autumn.
## Garden character
The Royal Horticultural Society describes the selection as about 90 cm tall and gives a mature range of 1–1.5 m high by 0.5–1 m wide. Its compact proportions suit a sunny mixed border or grass planting, with foliage roughly 3–5 ft high and a clump about 2–3 ft wide. The gold banding is most visible in a sunny position, while the pale flower heads fade to silver and can remain through winter.
## Growing conditions
Give Hinjo full sun and moist but well-drained soil. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand among suitable soil types. As with other maiden grasses, leave enough room for a clump and check local guidance on non-native grasses and seed spread.
## Maintenance
Cut old foliage down in late winter or early spring, before or as new blades appear. Divide the clump in spring if it becomes crowded, and remove any seedlings that are not wanted.
