Strictus Maiden Grass

‘Strictus’ is a clump-forming, deciduous maiden grass with upright leaves crossed by bright yellow bands. Its crinkled, silvery plumes rise in autumn above the tall foliage. ## Garden character Published garden dimensions vary: the Royal Horticultural Society lists 1.5–2.5 m in height and 0.1–0.5 m in spread, while Kwantlen Polytechnic University's database lists 2–3 m by 1–1.5 m. Allow generous room when grouping it, since reports differ substantially on mature width. The bold horizontal striping and stiff upright outline make it an architectural accent, screen edge, or seasonal focal point. The foliage is deciduous and the flower stems add winter texture. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun and moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The RHS lists clay, loam, sand, and chalk as suitable soil types; protect the crown from excessive winter wet. Give the clump enough space to show its upright form and to avoid crowding adjacent plants. ## Maintenance Leave standing foliage for winter structure, then remove dead leaves and flower stems in spring before new growth advances. Divide an established clump in spring if it becomes congested.
