Noni is a tropical evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy leaves, small white flowers, and knobby fruit that ripens from green to yellow-white. Flowers and fruit may appear throughout the year in suitable conditions, and ripe fruit has a strong, distinctive odor. ## Form and Fruit
At maturity, noni is reported at about 3–10 m (10–33 ft) tall, though its form and fruit vary across plants and growing conditions. It can be grown as a landscape shrub or small tree, a hedge, or a tropical fruit plant; its glossy, opposite leaves and rounded heads of white flowers provide ornamental interest.
## Growing Conditions
Noni grows in full sun and tolerates a wide range of shade, soil acidity, fertility, and drainage, though free-draining soil is preferred. Established cultivated plants can withstand extended drought, while the species also tolerates flooding, saline soils, and ocean salt spray. Windy sites can reduce growth and yields, and branches may break under heavy fruit loads or strong winds.
## Maintenance
Grow noni in a warm climate and allow room for its eventual tree or shrub form. Water during establishment, then adjust irrigation to local rainfall and soil drainage; mature plants can tolerate long dry periods. Monitor branches in exposed or heavily fruiting sites, and prune as needed to maintain a sound structure.
