Lindheimer's muhly (Muhlenbergia lindheimeri) is a warm-season perennial grass native to South and Central Texas and northeastern Mexico. NC State Extension describes an upright, dense clump with fine gray-green to blue-green foliage and silvery, purplish, or whitish panicles that may appear from May through November. [NC State Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/muhlenbergia-lindheimeri/common-name/lindheimers-muhly/).
## Size and site
The published mature range is 2–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide. The profile lists USDA hardiness zones 6a–9b, full sun, and well-drained clay, loam, or limestone soils with neutral to alkaline pH. Lindheimer's muhly is used as a specimen or screen, and birds eat its seeds.
## Growing habit
The species is fast-growing, clumping, heat- and drought-tolerant, and resistant to deer. Its foliage can persist through winter but may become dormant. Flowers may be reduced in shade or with excess water, and foliage can flop in overly wet, shady, or rich soil.
## Maintenance
Water new plants as they establish, then avoid overwatering and provide good drainage. Remove brittle old flower stalks and rake out dead leaves to refresh the clump. Avoid cutting the grass back during cold weather, when recovery may be slow; propagation is by seed or division.
