Veranda is a fast-growing Cavendish banana cultivar grown for lush tropical foliage and full-sized edible fruit. A warm, sunny growing season supports fruiting, while indoor plants may remain ornamental.
## Form and fruit
The cultivar’s product profile lists a mature size of about 6–8 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide. Like other edible bananas, it produces fruit on a flowering stalk; after fruiting, that pseudostem dies and a replacement shoot can take its place. Plants kept indoors year-round may not receive enough summer warmth to set fruit.
## Growing conditions
Grow outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, in full sun for best growth and fruiting; partial shade is tolerated. Use moist, well-drained soil and water regularly. Bananas are sensitive to cold and wind, so choose a sheltered position. In colder regions, grow Veranda in a large container and move it indoors when temperatures approach 50°F.
## Maintenance
Use a container at least 20 inches across with free-draining potting mix. Maintain a small mat of healthy pseudostems and remove extra suckers; cut back each stem after it has fruited. Mulch around the root zone while keeping the pseudostem bases clear.
