About Jaboticaba Tree

Sabara jaboticaba is a slow-growing evergreen fruit tree whose white flowers and dark, grape-like fruits appear directly on older branches and the trunk. Its rounded crown and edible, sweet-tart fruit make it both an ornamental specimen and a distinctive warm-climate food plant. ## Growing The accepted species is [Plinia cauliflora at Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:203847-2); Myrciaria cauliflora is an older synonym. The [University of Florida IFAS guide](https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/trees-and-shrubs/trees/jaboticaba/) describes fragrant white flowers, dark edible berries, a rounded vase-shaped habit, and regular moisture in well-drained soil. It notes that fruit may take several years to begin and can appear in flushes, especially in spring, with occasional crops at other times. The same guide reports that high-pH Florida soils may need adjustment and that coastal salt exposure should be avoided. Grow it in full sun or partial shade, allowing room for the mature tree and easy harvest. ## Harvest Pick berries when fully dark and ripe; they soften and spoil quickly, so use or refrigerate them soon after harvest. Fruit is eaten fresh or used in preserves and drinks. ## Maintenance Keep soil consistently moist while the tree establishes, then water during dry weather. Protect the shallow root zone with mulch, keep the trunk area clear, and prune only as needed to maintain access and a balanced crown.
