About Fire Power Nandina Shrub

Fire Power is a compact, evergreen cultivar of Nandina domestica, grown chiefly for colored foliage. Young leaves flush red, summer growth mixes red with yellow-green, and autumn and winter foliage turns orange and red; small white flower panicles appear in summer ([RHS Fire Power profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/53051/nandina-domestica-fire-power/details)). ## Site and use Grow in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered sunny position or light shade. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand and notes drought resistance. NC State Extension describes Fire Power as a dwarf form with very few flowers or fruit and excellent red winter foliage; it is used as low ground cover where suckering is acceptable. The same source cautions that alkaline soil may cause leaf chlorosis ([NC State Extension cultivar profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/nandina-domestica-fire-power/)). ## Garden placement Use this colorful shrub in a border, container, or low ground-cover planting. Evergreen foliage maintains structure through the year, with red, orange, and yellow-green tones changing through the seasons. ## Maintenance RHS lists the plant as harmful if eaten. Avoid eating its berries and keep any fruit away from children and pets.
