Poet’s daffodil (Narcissus poeticus) is a spring-flowering bulb that bears a fragrant, solitary flower on each stem. White petals surround a small yellow cup edged in red, the distinctive pheasant’s-eye pattern ([North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/narcissus-poeticus/); [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/11384/narcissus-poeticus-13/details)).
## Flowers and form
The flowers open in mid to late spring, with timing varying by site. Narrow, straplike green to gray-green leaves grow in clumps, and the bulbs can naturalize over time. Size listings differ: North Carolina Extension gives about 1–1.5 feet high and 6–9 inches wide, while RHS lists a broader 0.1–0.5 metre range for both height and spread.
## Site and planting
This species is listed for USDA zones 3a–7b. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained, organically rich soil. It tolerates wet soil during winter and spring growth; reduce moisture in summer and fall. Use it in naturalized plantings, border fronts, under trees, containers, or as a cut flower.
## Safety
Narcissus plants should not be eaten. RHS notes that the plant can irritate skin and is harmful to pets if eaten, so wear gloves when handling bulbs and keep them away from children and animals.
## Maintenance
Plant bulbs about 4–5 inches deep roughly six weeks before the first local freeze. Deadhead after flowering, then leave the leaves in place until they brown naturally.
