This record is the garden nasturtium, Tropaeolum majus, a warm-season ornamental annual distinct from watercress in the genus Nasturtium. Garden forms range from compact bushes to long, trailing or climbing plants, so the available space and intended use determine whether support is needed. ## Growing habit
The shield-shaped leaves and spurred flowers are characteristic of the garden species. NC State Extension describes dwarf forms about a foot tall and two feet wide, while climbing forms can reach much farther vertically. Flowers and foliage vary among cultivars, and both compact and climbing forms are available. Leaves, buds, flowers, pods, and seeds are edible and have a peppery taste.
## Maintenance
Grow in full sun, with some afternoon shade in hot summers, and use poor to average, well-drained soil. Rich feeding favors leaf growth over flowers. Allow trailing stems to spill from a container or provide a support for climbing forms. Watch for aphids, mealybugs, and whiteflies, and remove unwanted seedlings because plants may self-seed.
