Sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis) is a deciduous, shade-loving perennial for moist woodland beds and naturalized plantings. Its broad, bright-green sterile fronds form a loose groundcover, while distinctive fertile fronds turn brown and persist after the growing season. ## Foliage and Spread
The sterile fronds have deeply divided leaflets and conspicuous netted veins. Gold to yellow fall color adds seasonal interest; the shorter fertile fronds become brown as summer advances and can remain through winter. Creeping rhizomes help the plant fill a moist site, so allow room for gradual spread.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in shade or partial shade in consistently moist, organic-rich soil. The species tolerates clay and loam, but foliage can deteriorate in hot weather when soil dries. It is native to eastern North America and eastern Asia, and the Extension profile lists USDA hardiness zones 2a–10b. Its recommended dimensions are about 1–2 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide.

## Maintenance
Keep the root zone evenly moist, especially during warm weather. Remove old or damaged fronds as needed; leave fertile fronds in place if you want their winter structure and spore-bearing display.
