Mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus), also called dwarf lilyturf, is an evergreen perennial groundcover with narrow, arching leaves and a low, mounding form. It is useful along paths, beneath shrubs, or as a shade-tolerant edging plant; it can also replace lawn in small shaded areas. ## Foliage and Flowers
The dark-green leaves form a dense carpet. Short, pale lilac to white flowers appear among the foliage in summer, followed by small metallic-blue berries that are often partly hidden. The NC State profile lists mature dimensions of 6–12 inches tall and wide.
## Growing Conditions
Mondo grass prefers shade and moist, well-drained soil, and tolerates full sun when given additional moisture. It is listed for USDA zones 6a–10b and is described as resistant to deer and foot traffic. The species spreads by runners, so allow it to fill gradually around neighboring plants.

## Maintenance
Water during dry periods, especially in sunny sites. Divide clumps when you want to renew or relocate the planting. If grown as turf, the NC State profile recommends an annual mowing; otherwise, remove only damaged foliage as needed.
