About Engelmann's Prickly Pear

Engelmann’s prickly pear is an accepted Opuntia species native from the southwestern and south-central United States into Mexico. Kew describes it as a succulent shrub of temperate regions, while the University of Arizona Campus Arboretum describes its large, ascending or sometimes sprawling form and yellow spring flowers ([Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:60447905-2/general-information); [University of Arizona Campus Arboretum](https://apps.cals.arizona.edu/arboretum/taxon.aspx?id=890)). ## Form and placement The fleshy, segmented green pads have areoles bearing spines and tiny glochids; the plant can develop a broad, branching outline. Its scale and spiny pads suit a sunny dry garden or rock garden with room away from paths. The arboretum profile also notes reddish-purple fruits following the flowers. ## Growing conditions Use a bright site and soil that drains freely. North Carolina State Extension’s [Opuntia guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/opuntia/) recommends full sun and good drainage for prickly pears generally and cautions that wet or soggy soil can lead to root rot. This broad cultural guidance complements the species-level habitat information. ## Maintenance Give the pads working space and avoid routine contact. Wear protective gloves when planting or clearing nearby debris because glochids and spines can irritate skin.
