Opuntia engelmannii var. lindheimeri (Engelm.) B.D.Parfitt & Pinkava is an accepted botanical variety in Cactaceae under the [current Kew treatment](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/281632-2). Kew describes a succulent shrub native from southeastern New Mexico toward southwestern Louisiana and parts of Mexico. This is the actual variety, not the full O. engelmannii species or an identified nursery clone.
Kew lists Opuntia lindheimeri Engelm. as a homotypic synonym. Its current treatment also includes O. engelmannii var. linguiformis, O. lindheimeri var. linguiformis and O. linguiformis as heterotypic synonyms. An [alternative taxonomy cited by Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:281633-2) recognizes var. linguiformis separately; [USDA GRIN](https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/taxon/taxonomydetail?id=435356) associates cowtongue prickly-pear with that name. This treatment difference does not establish a particular long-pad form or clone.
## New Mexico — qualified historical-name context
The [NMSU and New Mexico State Forestry list](https://www.emnrd.nm.gov/sfd/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/FireWisePlantMaterialsNMSU.pdf), page 4, pairs Opuntia lindheimeri with Cow tongue prickly pear in its Shrubs table. This documentary association follows the explicit synonym bridge to the current Kew variety, whose treatment also includes the alternate linguiformis concept. It does not arbitrarily choose one of two separately accepted varieties under the older treatment, assign the row to the full species, or identify a cow-tongue clone. The compiler's treatment, intended material and biological source concept remain unresolved; no assessment of every plant within the modern variety is established.
The row's reference values are very-low to low water, full sun, approximately 3–6 feet tall and April bloom. Elevation is in thousands of feet: Y at 4, 5 and 6; ? at 7; N at 8 and 9+. The legend defines Y as yes, N as not recommended and ? as unknown or doubtful. These values remain source-row context, not authenticated traits or USDA zones for this whole variety. No scalar dimensions, hardiness, leaf, flower or form attributes are inferred from uncertain material.
Follow the source's watering, spacing, dead-material removal and plant-condition guidance, with separated groups and noncombustible breaks. Confirm actual material and current local suitability before specification. No plant is fireproof.
