Bunny Ears Cactus

Bunny Ears Cactus forms branching clumps of flat, paired pads that resemble rabbit ears. The pads lack long spines but carry clusters of fine, barbed glochids that detach easily; North Carolina State Extension describes this species as native to northern Mexico and gives a mature size of about 2–3 feet tall by 4–5 feet wide ([Rabbit Cactus profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/opuntia-microdasys/common-name/rabbit-cactus/)). ## Form and placement Light green pads and dotted areoles make this a recognizable accent for a sunny rock garden or a container. Its spread and irritating bristles call for a position away from narrow paths, play areas, and places where the pads may be brushed. ## Growing conditions Use a fast-draining cactus mix or a freely draining outdoor site. The Extension profile recommends full sun to partial shade and letting the soil dry completely between waterings; persistently wet soil can lead to rot. It also notes that cold-climate plants need winter protection. ## Maintenance Wear protective gloves when moving or pruning this cactus, and handle detached pads with tools rather than bare hands.
