About Prickly Pear Cactus 'Rose'

Opuntia polyacantha is a low, spreading prickly pear whose flattened pads form a dense mat. The species is valued for its seasonal flowers and drought-country form; its stature and flower color vary across its broad range and among garden-grown plants. ## Form and season The Royal Horticultural Society describes a perennial cactus with pad segments up to about 40 cm tall and a spread of roughly 1.5–2.5 m. Its profile records solitary yellow or magenta flowers in summer. At Arches National Park, the National Park Service notes yellow, bronze, pink, or violet petals and flowering from April through June, illustrating the species’ geographic and floral variation. The NPS account also identifies insects and hummingbirds as pollinators. The RHS lists loam or sand and recommends well-drained conditions; patio containers and rock gardens are suitable where drainage is reliable. Allow room for outward spread and keep pads away from paths. ## Maintenance Use gloves and eye protection when handling the plant: the pads bear spines and fine bristles that can irritate skin and eyes. For container culture, let the compost dry between spring and early-autumn waterings, then withhold water while dormant in winter.
