Create design onlineAbout Fragrant Tea Olive Tree
Fragrant tea olive is a dense evergreen shrub or small tree with small flowers whose apricot-like scent can be enjoyed near a path or entrance. North Carolina State Extension describes early-spring and fall flowering, full sun to partial shade, and a mature spread of 10–14 feet ([plant profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/osmanthus-fragrans/)).
## Form and fragrance
Glossy, leathery leaves give this broadleaf evergreen year-round structure. Tiny flowers may be white or orange depending on variety, but their fragrance is the main seasonal feature. The species can be used as a specimen, hedge, or screen; dried flowers are also used to scent tea.
## Siting
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and provide full sun to partial shade. In warm southern locations, afternoon shade is helpful. Once established, the shrub tolerates dry periods, though supplemental water can help during hot, dry weather.
## Maintenance
Prune selectively after considering the next flowering season: blossoms form on the current year’s growth, so heavy pruning can reduce the following display. Watch for scale and aphids, and protect the plant from severe frost that can affect flowering.
