About Avalanche Sun Daisy

Avalanche is a hardy white sun daisy selected for its long spring-to-summer bloom and evergreen foliage. The Plant Select® profile describes large white flowers with metallic reverses, a low mat-forming habit, strong disease resistance and repeat bloom through late summer. It attracts pollinators and tolerates dry conditions when planted in a well-drained site ([Plant Select plant profile](https://plantselect.org/plant/osteospermum-avalanche-sup-pp-22-705-sup/)). ## Form and flowering The blossoms close at night, revealing silvery metallic backs to the petals. Plants make a spreading evergreen mat and can be used in sunny borders, containers, rock gardens or xeriscapes. The species is a hybrid selected by Panayoti Kelaidis and received a Plant Select® award in 2011 ([Monrovia cultivar profile](https://www.monrovia.com/avalanche-white-sun-daisy.html)). ## Site and care Grow in sun or part sun in well-drained clay, loam or sandy soil. Water regularly through the first growing season to establish roots, then reduce irrigation; avoid frequently wet soil and poorly drained sites. Plant Select lists USDA Zones 4–9. ## Maintenance Trim back dead stems in early spring and deadhead periodically to keep the mat attractive. This long-lived perennial performs best when drainage is good and irrigation remains moderate to low.
