Sourwood

Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) is a slow-growing southeastern native tree in the blueberry family, Ericaceae. [North Carolina State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/oxydendrum-arboreum/) lists a mature size of 20–30 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide and describes fragrant, white, bell-shaped flowers in drooping clusters from June to July. Its glossy green leaves develop vivid red, purple, and sometimes yellow fall color. ### Placement Grow in full sun to partial shade. Sourwood prefers acidic, organic-rich soil with good drainage and moisture that ranges from moist to occasionally dry. The rounded to pyramidal crown and multi-season display suit woodland gardens, understory sites, and larger residential landscapes. Give the tree space to reach its published dimensions. ## Maintenance North Carolina State Extension describes Sourwood as low maintenance and slow growing. It does not transplant well once established, so choose the planting site carefully and move only young plants when necessary. Keep the root zone evenly mulched and avoid disturbing it as the tree matures.
