Pachypodium lamerei, commonly called Madagascar palm, is a succulent shrub or small tree rather than a true palm. It has a silvery, thorn-covered stem and a crown of narrow leaves; mature plants bear fragrant white flowers with golden-yellow throats. ## Growth and display
This species is native to Madagascar and is grown as an ornamental for its sculptural stem and crown. Flowering is associated with mature plants. The common name describes its palm-like appearance, while its succulent growth and botanical family place it among Apocynaceae.
## Maintenance
Provide full sun and a warm position in a free-draining cactus or succulent mix. During active growth, water moderately and allow the compost to drain; keep it much drier during its resting period. The RHS recommends bright, full light and protection from cold under glass. Handle carefully because the stem has sharp spines and the sap is toxic; avoid contact with eyes or mouth and wash exposed skin.
