About Bartzella Peony

Bartzella is an intersectional Itoh peony introduced by Roger F. Anderson in 1986. It forms a leafy clump topped by large lemon-yellow flowers with red flares and a pronounced sweet fragrance. ## Flowers and placement The American Peony Society registers Bartzella as a full-double yellow hybrid with red flares, strong stems, and six-to-eight-inch flowers. Its award profile describes late mid-season flowering and a vigorous, densely foliated clump that works well at the front of a mixed border. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/178427/paeonia-bartzella-i/details) describes the intersectional hybrid as a woody-based perennial with early- to mid-summer flowers. Its mature height and spread are about three feet. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun or partial shade in rich, well-drained soil. The [Walters Gardens Bartzella profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=PAEBA) recommends an evenly moist site and notes that established plants tolerate drought. Allow space for the clump and avoid planting where water stands around the crown. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers for a tidier display, then cut back herbaceous growth after it dies down in autumn. Water the soil around the plant rather than wetting the foliage, and avoid high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer.
