About Peony 'Buckeye Belle'

Buckeye Belle is an early herbaceous hybrid peony bred by Mains and introduced in 1956. Its semi-double, dark ruby-red flowers open above sturdy stems, with yellow stamens at the center and burgundy tones in the emerging spring foliage. ## Flowers and placement The American Peony Society describes Buckeye Belle as an early, semi-double hybrid with dark red outer petals and yellow anthers; it also records a mild scent. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/46276/paeonia-buckeye-belle/details) describes deep ruby-red flowers with golden stamens, deeply cut foliage flushed red in spring, and a mature height near 90 centimeters. The upright flowers work in a mixed border and can be cut for arrangements. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade in deep, fertile soil that stays moist but drains well. Choose a sheltered site to protect the blooms and stems from strong wind. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/46276/paeonia-buckeye-belle/details) recommends moist, well-drained soil, while the [American Peony Society](https://americanpeonysociety.org/learn/about-the-peonies/care/) advises watering the soil around the drip line and keeping water off the foliage. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers, then cut herbaceous stems back after the foliage dies in autumn. Keep the crown out of chronically wet soil, especially in winter.
