About Peony 'Charlie's White'

Charlie's White is a classic lactiflora peony registered by Carl G. Klehm in 1951. Its early, double white flowers have a subtle yellow cast, and the American Peony Society describes it as a tall, vigorous grower that opens at about the same time as ‘Mons. Jules Elie’. [American Peony Society cultivar registry](https://americanpeonysociety.org/cultivars/peony-registry/charlies-white/). ## Garden Use and Growing Conditions The large double blooms make a strong spring display in a sunny perennial bed or border. General peony guidance from University of Illinois Extension recommends full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Plant shallowly, keeping the crown close to the soil surface, and avoid heavy fertilization because it can reduce bloom. [University of Illinois Extension peony guide](https://extension.illinois.edu/flowers/peony). ## Maintenance Water newly planted peonies through establishment and during extended dry weather. Keep the crown at the recommended shallow planting depth, and clear away dead foliage in early spring without damaging new shoots.
