About Peony 'Edulis Superba'

Edulis Superba is a historic lactiflora peony introduced by Lémon in 1824. Its very early double blooms combine bright old-rose pink guard petals and center petals with a collar of narrower, lighter petals. The American Peony Society describes the cultivar as very fragrant, tall, and extremely floriferous, with stems that may bend under the flowers. [American Peony Society cultivar registry](https://americanpeonysociety.org/cultivars/peony-registry/edulis-superba/). ## Garden Use and Growing Conditions Edulis Superba is widely grown as a cut flower and also brings an early pink display to the perennial garden. Plant it in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. University of Illinois Extension advises keeping peony crowns shallow and using very light fertilization to avoid suppressing bloom. [University of Illinois Extension peony guide](https://extension.illinois.edu/flowers/peony). ## Maintenance Water during establishment and extended dry weather, while allowing excess water to drain. Because flowering stems may bend, a support placed before buds open can help keep stems upright. Remove old foliage in early spring, taking care around emerging shoots.
