Paeonia 'Gardenia' is a bushy, clump-forming herbaceous peony with dark green, divided leaves. In early summer it bears fragrant, double white flowers, sometimes washed with a faint pink blush.
## In the Garden
The substantial flowers, about 20–25 cm across, rise on sturdy stems and make this cultivar an attractive focal point in a perennial border. Allow roughly 0.5–1 m for mature height and spread, and plant it where the clump can remain in place.
## Growing Conditions
Set the peony in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/182524/paeonia-lactiflora-gardenia/details) lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand as suitable soil types and notes that the flowers may carry a light pink tint.
## Maintenance
Water newly planted specimens during dry weather and keep the crown clear of standing water. Once established, this long-lived perennial benefits from a stable position and room for its foliage to mature.
