About Peony 'Highlight'

‘Highlight’ is a lactiflora peony introduced by Auten / Wild & Son in 1952. The American Peony Society describes its flowers as dark red, double, and of pleasing form and substance; it blooms in late midseason and has good stems. [American Peony Society cultivar registry](https://americanpeonysociety.org/cultivars/peony-registry/highlight/). ## Garden Use and Growing Conditions Plant this red-flowering perennial in a sunny border or cutting garden. Illinois Extension recommends full sun and moist, well-drained soil for peonies. Set the root crown shallowly, since planting too deeply can limit flowering, and use only light fertilizer. [University of Illinois Extension peony guide](https://extension.illinois.edu/flowers/peony). ## Maintenance Water during establishment and extended dry periods, while keeping the soil well drained. Cut back and remove old foliage in early spring. The registry notes good stems and medium height; it does not identify a staking requirement.
