Peony 'Kansas'

Kansas is a lactiflora peony introduced by Bigger in 1940. The color descriptions differ between sources, while both record a double-flowered peony. ### Placement Grow Kansas in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that stays moist but drains well. Use it in a perennial border with room for the clump to develop and for the large flowers to show above the foliage. The RHS lists a mature height and spread range of 0.5–1 m; the American Peony Society notes stems around 30 inches high. Its dependable flowering and strong stems make it useful as a substantial mid-border peony. ### Seasonal display The blooms add a strong color accent in the peony season. Their red tones can stand out among pale spring flowers or repeat warmer colors elsewhere in a mixed border. The American Peony Society records the cultivar’s Gold Medal award in 1957. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers after bloom. Cut foliage down after it dies back in fall and clear away spent leaves. Water new plants during dry periods as they establish, and avoid planting in ground that stays waterlogged.
