About Peony 'Flame'

Paeonia 'Flame' is an early flowering herbaceous hybrid peony with single, brilliant red flowers and a golden center of stamens. The [American Peony Society registry]() records the selection as an herbaceous hybrid introduced by Glasscock in 1939; the [RHS profile]() describes a clump-forming plant with pinkish-red petals. ## Flowers and habit The American Peony Society describes a bright red, single flower and an early bloom, while the RHS notes flowering in late spring and early summer. The RHS profile gives a height of about 80 cm and dark green divided leaves. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Peonies prefer a rich site with good drainage; the [RHS growing guide]() covers planting depth and the care of herbaceous and intersectional peonies. ## Maintenance Water newly planted peonies while they establish and during prolonged dry periods. Avoid waterlogged soil. After the foliage dies back in autumn, cut the herbaceous stems to ground level, following the [RHS profile]().
