Paeonia lactiflora 'Francois Ortegat' is a historic peony with dark red flowers and a pleasant fragrance. The [American Peony Society registry]( ) records Parmentier as originator in Belgium in 1850 and describes medium-sized, semi-double flowers; the [RHS profile]() describes fragrant, dark purple-red flowers.
## Flowers and habit
The APS account calls the flower semi-double, while the RHS describes it as double, so fullness can be described as variable in published accounts. Both sources place the flowers in the midseason or summer period. The RHS characterizes the plant as upright and bushy, with a mature height and spread of 0.5–1 m.
## Growing conditions
Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sandy soils as suitable and advises a sheltered position. The [RHS growing guide]() provides planting advice for garden peonies.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and dry spells, but avoid standing water. Remove the stems at ground level in autumn after the foliage has died back, as recommended in the [RHS guide]().
