About Peony 'Madame Emile Debatene'

Paeonia lactiflora 'Madame Emile Debatene' is a fragrant, double-flowered peony with pink blooms touched by salmon. The [American Peony Society registry]() records Dessert and Doriat as originators in France in 1927 and describes a dependable, late-midseason flowering cultivar. ## Flowers and habit The [RHS profile]() lists “Madame Emile Debatene” as a synonym and describes an upright, bushy perennial with spicily scented, double, saucer-shaped flowers in late spring and early summer. It gives a mature height and spread of 0.5–1 m. The RHS recognizes this spelling as a synonym of *Paeonia lactiflora*. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, or sandy ground as suitable and recommends a sheltered position. Avoid deep planting so the crown can flower reliably. ## Maintenance Water newly planted peonies until established, then during prolonged dry periods. Let excess water drain away, and cut old stems back after the foliage dies in autumn. See the [RHS growing guide]() for general peony planting and pruning advice.
