About Peony 'Madame Calot'

Paeonia 'Madame Calot' is a historic lactiflora-group peony introduced in France by Miellez in 1856. The [American Peony Society registry](https://americanpeonysociety.org/cultivars/peony-registry/madame-calot/) describes an early, very fragrant double flower with old-rose pink petals, creamy collar tints and crimson flecks in the darker center. ## Garden use Its strong stems and prolific flowering make it suitable for a flower border and for cutting. The registry notes that plants may take until their third year or later to produce flowers of their best quality, so give the clump time to establish. ## Growing conditions Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil and leave the plant undisturbed once established. The [RHS herbaceous-peony guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/peony/herbaceous) covers general siting and soil care for these long-lived perennials. ## Maintenance Remove spent flowers after the display and cut foliage back in autumn when it has died down.
