About Peony 'Red Magic'

Red Magic is a clump-forming herbaceous peony with large, densely double flowers in deep red to reddish pink. The blooms appear in late spring and early summer, and the divided green foliage forms a leafy mound. [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/179879/paeonia-lactiflora-red-magic/details) identifies the cultivar as a lactiflora peony; [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/paeonia-herbaceous-types/) describes its large, double, fragrant red flowers. ## In the garden Plant Red Magic in a sunny or lightly shaded border where its full flowers can be seen, or grow it for cutting. The RHS gives a mature height and spread of about 0.5–1 m. Leave space around the clump for airflow and to accommodate the foliage after flowering. ## Growing conditions Use fertile, well-drained soil that remains moist through the early growing season. Water as needed while new growth and flower buds develop, especially during dry spells. Peonies establish slowly and can skip flowering during the first year or two after planting. Large double flowers may benefit from support in wet weather. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/paeonia-herbaceous-types/) provides further guidance on siting, establishment, and disease prevention. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers and cut the stems back after the foliage dies down in autumn. Clear diseased leaves and keep the planting open so air can move through the clump.
