About Tree Peony 'Asuka'

Tree peony 'Asuka' is a named woody peony cultivar with pink flowers. Iowa State lists Asuka among its recommended tree-peony cultivars and describes tree peonies as shrubs whose woody stems remain above ground through winter. ([Iowa State University Extension](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/peony-types-and-cultivars-iowa)) ## Garden placement Tree peonies flower in spring, before many herbaceous peonies, and their large blooms are best appreciated where they can be viewed up close. In Iowa, tree peonies commonly reach about 3–5 feet tall; growth and flowering vary with climate, plant age, and cultivar. ## Growing conditions Choose a sheltered site with well-drained soil and steady moisture during dry periods. Allow the shrub to establish before expecting full flowering, and avoid disturbing its woody stems in winter. ## Maintenance Do not cut a tree peony back to the ground. Shape it only after flowering; in early spring, remove dead, damaged, or broken stems once new growth makes them easy to identify. ([Ask Extension](https://ask.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=360575))
