About Tree Peony 'Godaishu'

Godaishu is a historic Japanese tree-peony cultivar recorded by the [American Peony Society registry](https://americanpeonysociety.org/cultivars/peony-registry/godaishu/) before 1931 in the suffruticosa group. The registry describes large, globe-like flowers, and the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/61248/paeonia-%C3%97-suffruticosa-godaishu-s/details) accepts the name Paeonia × suffruticosa 'Godaishu'. ## Garden use Tree peonies grow as long-lived flowering shrubs rather than trees. Their large blooms and substantial foliage suit a sheltered border where the plant can remain undisturbed and develop over time. Its large flowers have a globelike form. ## Growing conditions Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot sheltered from cold, drying winds. Tree peonies prefer fertile, humus-rich soil that drains well; water regularly through the first growing season and mulch annually, as outlined in the [RHS tree-peony guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/peony/tree/growing-guide). ## Maintenance Prune minimally. Remove dead shoots in late winter and cut flowered shoots back just above new growth after flowering.
