About Tree Peony 'Hakushin'

Hakushin is a deciduous tree peony with woody stems and divided green leaves. Its large, semi-double white flowers have a pale pink tint at the center and golden stamens, opening in early summer. [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/153468/paeonia-%C3%97-suffruticosa-hakushin-s/details) describes a mature shrub about 1–1.5 m tall and wide. ## In the garden Use this long-lived shrub as a spring-to-summer focal point in a border or beside a sheltered path. The woody framework remains above ground through winter, while the leafy canopy and flowers provide seasonal interest. Allow room for its eventual spread and avoid placing it where cold, drying winds will strike it. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade in deep, fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains freely. Choose an open, sheltered position. The RHS gives chalk, clay, loam, and sandy soils as suitable and advises moist but well-drained conditions. Water during establishment and in dry weather. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone evenly moist during active growth without leaving the soil waterlogged. Remove faded flowers and prune only to remove dead or damaged growth, Prune out dead stems in late winter, mulch in spring, and water in dry spells during the first year.
