Tree Peony 'Kaoukamon'

Kaoukamon is a tree peony with double, dark maroon flowers and golden-yellow stamens. Pleasant Run Nursery describes the lightly scented blooms as opening in mid-to-late spring and lists the plant at about 3 feet tall and wide. [Pleasant Run Nursery](https://www.pleasantrunnursery.com/plant-name/Paeonia-suffruticosa-Kaoukamon) also notes that the flowers are useful in fresh arrangements and attract butterflies. ## In the garden Use Kaoukamon as a compact flowering shrub or a focal point in a mixed border. Its woody stems remain through winter, and its divided foliage can color in fall. The dark buds and maroon petals contrast well with lighter spring flowers and foliage. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist soil that does not stay saturated. A sheltered position gives the woody stems and large blooms protection from strong, drying winds. The source lists USDA hardiness zone 4 and indicates average to moist soil conditions. ## Maintenance Water while the plant establishes and during dry spells, then maintain even soil moisture without waterlogging. Remove faded flowers and avoid unnecessary pruning of the woody framework.
