About Tree Peony 'Muramatsu'

Muramatsu is a tree peony, a woody, deciduous shrub with large, divided leaves and a late-spring to early-summer display. Tree-peony selections vary in flower color, form and mature size, so the [RHS tree-peony guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/peony/tree/growing-guide) and [Oregon State University profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/paeonia-suffruticosa) are used here for group-level growing advice. ## Garden placement Use this long-lived shrub as a focal plant in a sheltered mixed border. Its woody framework and divided foliage provide structure beyond the flowering season, while its mature size makes an undisturbed position useful. ## Growing conditions Choose full sun or light shade and deep, fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains freely. Shelter the plant from cold, drying winds and water it through its first summer. Once established, tree peonies tolerate dry spells, although prolonged drought can reduce flowering the following year. ## Maintenance Tree peonies need little pruning. Remove flowered shoots just above new growth in summer or autumn, and cut dead shoots back to a healthy bud in late winter. Avoid hard pruning of the woody framework.
