Shimadaijin is an accepted tree-peony cultivar with large, lightly fragrant, semi-double violet flowers and yellow anthers. The [RHS plant profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/182410/paeonia-%C3%97-suffruticosa-shimadaijin-s/details) describes a deciduous shrub with divided green leaves and gives a mature size range of 1.5–2.5 m high by 1–1.5 m wide.
## Garden use
Its substantial flower display suits a sheltered mixed border, where the woody shrub can remain undisturbed and develop over time. The RHS lists a columnar-upright habit and flowering in late spring and early summer.
## Growing conditions
Choose full sun or partial shade, protected from cold, drying winds. Plant in deep, fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains well. Water through the first summer; once established, tree peonies tolerate dry periods, although a prolonged drought can affect next year's flowers.
The RHS notes that this plant can irritate the skin of dogs and cats.
## Maintenance
Remove faded flowers after blooming. Tree peonies need little pruning: cut flowered shoots just above new growth in summer or autumn and remove dead shoots to a healthy bud in late winter. Do not cut the woody stems to ground level.
