About Tree Peony 'Yachiyotsubaki'

‘Yachiyotsubaki’ is a Japanese tree peony cultivar in the suffruticosa group, recorded by the American Peony Society as established before 1931. A cultivar-specific profile describes semi-double pink flowers, about 1.2–1.5 m tall and 0.9–1.2 m wide, flowering in May and June ([APS registry](https://americanpeonysociety.org/cultivars/peony-registry/yachiyo-tsubaki/); [Gardify profile](https://gardify.de/pflanze/3203/StrauchPfingstrose-Yachiyo-Tsubaki)). ## Flowers and placement The flowers are bowl-shaped and can reach about 20 cm across. Plant this deciduous shrub in sun or partial shade, with room for its woody crown and a sheltered position. The specific profile lists loamy or sandy, well-drained soil and moderate moisture. Peony colors and bloom timing vary with local climate. ## Growing conditions The [RHS tree-peony guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/peony/tree/growing-guide) recommends fertile, well-drained soil and protection from strong winds and late frosts, which can damage young growth and flower buds. Its overview describes tree peonies as long-lived shrubs with permanent stems. ## Maintenance Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Mulch around, but not over, the crown in spring. Remove dead stems in late winter and avoid routine hard pruning; tree peonies retain woody stems from year to year.
