About Peony 'Tourangelle'

‘Tourangelle’ is a lactiflora peony introduced by Dessert in France in 1910. The American Peony Society describes a large, late-season double flower that is pale cream-white with tan shading and a flesh-pink center, with a mild fragrance ([APS registry](https://americanpeonysociety.org/cultivars/peony-registry/tourangelle/)). ## Flowers and placement The many irregular petals form a compact, rounded bloom; the registry notes medium plant height, abundant flowers and stems that may bend under the blooms. Use support where needed, especially for cut flowers or in exposed planting. The pale, nuanced color reads as cream, white and pink rather than a single solid shade. ## Growing conditions Choose a sunny site in fertile, well-drained soil. The [RHS herbaceous peony guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/peony/herbaceous/growing-guide) notes that peonies tolerate a range of soils, including clay, if they do not become waterlogged. Avoid moving the plant unless necessary, as established peonies prefer to remain undisturbed. ## Maintenance Water regularly during the first year and during prolonged drought. Remove spent blooms if seed is not wanted. Cut herbaceous stems to ground level after the foliage dies back in autumn, and clear away the leaves to reduce disease carryover.
