About Useful Screw Pine

Pandanus utilis, the useful screw pine, is an evergreen, palm-like tree with a branched crown, prop roots and stiff leaves edged with sharp spines. It is native to Madagascar and is grown for its strong architectural form; mature plants need room and careful placement away from paths. ## Growth and placement The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes a mature tree about 20–30 feet tall and 12–20 feet wide, with a pyramidal habit and high tolerance of coastal salt spray. It grows in full sun or partial shade and adapts to sandy, loamy or clay soils, provided drainage is suitable. Its existing hardiness range is USDA 10–11. Use it as a specimen or in a substantial container while young. Keep the sharp foliage and developing prop roots clear of walkways and structures. ## Flowers and fruit Plants are male or female. Male plants bear white flowers; female plants may develop large, pineapple-like fruits after pollination. Do not expect fruit from every plant. The Royal Horticultural Society notes that the species is grown under glass in cooler climates. ## Maintenance Grow outdoors in a warm, frost-free site with good drainage. Water regularly while establishing, then adjust to rainfall and soil moisture; established plants tolerate some drought. In containers, provide a bright position and a loam-based, free-draining compost. Handle the sharp leaf margins carefully and remove damaged foliage with gloves. In cool climates, grow in a conservatory or greenhouse and reduce watering during winter.
