About Switch grass 'Dewey Blue'

‘Dewey Blue’ is a clump-forming bitter switch grass with blue-green foliage and airy cream and blue-green flower sprays. Its upright mound keeps color into winter when the stems are left standing, giving borders and naturalized plantings texture after flowering. ## Garden Use Plant it as a cool-toned accent, in a rain garden, or to stabilize an eroding bank. Chicago Botanic Garden reports a mature size of about 4 ft tall by 3 ft wide and USDA Zones 2–9. Leave the dried foliage and seed heads through winter for seasonal structure. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun for the strongest growth, though this selection can adapt to some shade and varied soils. It tolerates conditions from sandy to wet; moderately fertile, well-drained soil is a reliable garden setting. Water during establishment, then adjust to the site and rainfall. ## Maintenance Cut old stems close to the ground in late winter before new growth starts. The Royal Horticultural Society also recommends removing dead foliage and old flower stems in spring.
