About Switch Grass 'Hot Rod'

Panicum virgatum ‘Hot Rod’ is an upright switch grass selected for its rapid color change. Its blue-green blades redden early, turning the clump a rich, deep maroon. ## Appearance and placement Emerald Coast Growers identifies ‘Hot Rod’ as its selection and lists a mature height of 42 inches, brown seedheads, and full-sun exposure. The existing mature spread is 2–3 feet. Its botanical identity and PP26074 patent number remain recorded with the plant. The upright form adds vertical foliage color to a mixed border or grass planting. ## Growing conditions This warm-season perennial grows best in full sun. North Carolina State Extension describes the species as adaptable to clay or sandy soil and notes that partial shade can make the foliage less upright. Emerald Coast Growers directly lists USDA hardiness zones 4–10. Water during establishment and during dry periods. ## Maintenance Allow the foliage to develop its color through the growing season and leave the seedheads standing for winter texture. Cut the clump back in late winter to early spring before new growth begins.
