Northwind Switch Grass

Northwind is a named switch-grass selection with a dense, upright, columnar clump and olive to bluish-green leaves. Pink-and-green spikelets form airy panicles in late summer, followed by seedheads and yellow-beige autumn foliage. It grows best in full sun and tolerates a range of soils; very wet, rich soil or shade can weaken its upright shape. ## Garden use Plant it as a vertical accent or repeat it in groups and mass plantings. Standing winter foliage helps protect soil and offers cover and food for birds. ## Maintenance Leave stems standing through winter, then cut them back in late winter or early spring.
