About Ruby Ribbons™ Switch Grass

Ruby Ribbons™ is the trade name for switch grass selection ‘RR1’, grown for foliage that changes from blue-green to wine red in midsummer and its upright, mounded habit. Darwin Perennials lists a mature height of 24–36 inches and spread of 12–24 inches, with hardiness Zone 4a–9a. [Darwin Perennials product page](https://www.darwinperennials.com/Products/Details/?phid=046600001019888) ## Foliage and form The foliage provides the main seasonal color, beginning blue-green and developing wine-red tones as it matures. The compact clump suits mixed perennial borders and larger containers. Darwin describes the selection as tolerant of deer, drought and heat once established; these traits do not remove the need for water during establishment. ## Plant history The plant patent identifies the botanical denomination as ‘RR1’ and was published as US Plant Patent 17,944 on August 28, 2007. The trade name Ruby Ribbons™ is used for this selection. [US Plant Patent 17,944](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP17944P3/en) ## Growing conditions Darwin recommends partial sun and medium water. Provide room for the stated spread and avoid persistently wet soil. Its published size range is retained here rather than reduced to a guessed mature measurement. ## Maintenance Water regularly during establishment and extended dry weather. Cut back old foliage before new spring growth becomes tall. Winter stems may be left standing for texture and removed in late winter or early spring.
